On 23rd December, 1914, the 2nd Grenadier Guards of 4 Brigade, 2nd Division left their billets in Bethune and marched to Le Touret where they took over some trenches at Rue de Cailloux. After heavy recent rain, these trenches were in a terrible condition, no better than water-logged ditches, but here they remained until relieved on Christmas Day. During their time here they did their best to improve the trenches while at the same time coming under both sniper and shell fire. Frederick Farr was killed on 24th December. |
